Sinatra started with a song. Fly Me to the Moon. Sean had the plane built first — black walnut wings, antique brass body, the whole thing taking shape on the bench — but the moon hadn't found its form yet. The piece wasn't finished until it had something to fly toward.

He found a clear crystal globe from an old chandelier and started experimenting. Oil and vinegar on the glass. Then white spray paint, then black, then dark wood stain. Hand-twirled. Wiped down. Tried again. Back and forth, back and forth, until he ended up with something he hadn't planned for — which turned out to be exactly what he was hoping for. The result is a crackled, luminous surface that looks like it was pulled from orbit.

Sinatra was also the first Random Brass piece where wood became part of the sculpture itself, not just the base. The wings are black walnut, integrated into the brass framework. Every other element is a lamp part — the fittings, the joints, the pull chain — all antique, all fit together without welding, bending, or solder. The base is hand-carved reclaimed wood, like every Random Brass piece.

Plug it in. Fly me to the moon.

Fully functional. One of a kind.

The reclaimed wood base and wings of this piece was sourced from Custom Cut Remodeling, a local woodworking shop in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Every Random Brass base is hand-carved by Sean from reclaimed material — wood that already had a life before it became part of a sculpture.
